Liberty is a hybrid apple cultivar developed by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. It is touted to be teh greatest diseas-free variety ever developed in particular apple scab. It was a seedling produced in 1955 from pollinating 'Macoun' from 'Purdue 54-12.
The fruit of 'Liberty' is a deep dark red. The ground color is yellowish. The red is striped rather than blushed. It ripens early Oct. 'Liberty' is considered to be primarily a eating or dessert apple. Norwood's very own Sam Andrews from Birdhouse farm has these planted at her property just outside of Norwood.
